500 jobs could be created with new prison in Fayette, PA
Fayette County officials said Wednesday the state could build one of two new prisons in German Township to handle overcrowding within the Department of Corrections system, which expects to run out of space for inmates by 2010.

State, county and township officials met twice this year with corrections department Secretary Jeffrey Beard at the German Township Municipal Building to discuss two potential sites for a 2,000-bed prison that would create more than 500 jobs.

"It's 99.9 percent" certain a prison will be built in Fayette, said state Rep. Tim Mahoney of South Union. "In politics, nothing is a sure thing until it's done."

Mahoney expects the state to make a decision by fall.

Pittsburg Tribune Review

Why can't 'we' break 'our' incarceration habit?

See; Communities Rally to Save Their Way of Life.

A few years ago, the Prison Industrial Complex bragged and claimed it was the second largest employer in the U.S. with GM then number one. If the PIC's employment claims were true, the recent job market reports and layoffs from U.S. automakers suggest the PIC is now likely the largest employer in the U.S.

In many states, their largest employer is the prison industry. And, their economies are further enhanced if they are able to leverage and successfully advertise their 24/7 no days off non-unionized 'modern day slaves' populations/workforces to Wall Street companies.

That's why its a 'big deal' when stories appear about a member of the PIC threatening to close prisons in a state, if they fail to pay increased 'bed' costs.

And, there is this other twist when watching prison openings, closings, and moratoriums, Prisoners of Census. Prisoner census fuels re-districting, realigns voter representation, and transfers federal funds from the losing community (urban areas) to the gaining community (rural areas).

1. Yeah, nothing stimulates a local economy like a prison.
And they can't be outsourced to another country! (Unless the prisoner isn't a citizen of this country, of course . . . ) Win-Win!
