IBM plans to add 15,000 new jobs worldwide
Announcement comes in the wake of a series of job cuts

By Scarlet Pruitt, IDG News Service January 20, 2004

Fresh from a profitable quarter, IBM Corp. has announced plans to hire 15,000 additional employees worldwide.

The hiring plans come just days after the Armonk, New York, company reported a 9.4 percent increase in fourth-quarter revenue, to $25.9 billion, and predicted that 2004 would herald the return of the IT industry growth cycle.

A U.K. representative for the company declined to say Monday where the jobs would be added. IBM currently has 315,889 employees worldwide, according to its Web site, and the new hires will bump it to almost 331,000.

In reporting its quarterly results last Thursday, the company said that it had strong growth in its services and personal systems group worldwide.

The announcement comes in the wake of a series of job cuts, during which the company said that it was trying to cut costs and reduce job redundancies. The latest trimming was made earlier this month when Big Blue slashed 400 U.S.-based software and services jobs.

2. It is good
4,500 - 5,000 jobs added in the U.S. and 15,000 total is definitely good news. Just because all of the jobs won't be in the U.S. doesn't mean we won't benefit. If the IBM workers in other countries increase corporate profits it will cause the stock price to increase, which in turn will increase many American's 401k and other investment accounts, increase capital gains tax collections, and increase the amount of taxes IBM pays.

3. Don't take this wrong, but let me guess. You are currently employed
and have a 401K.

A booming stock market alone is not helpful to the economy.

Capital gains collected - not nearly as much as would be collected and recycled back into the US economy if those jobs were here.

Increase in taxes paid by IBM, doubtful they are large enough to employee every tax loophole available. I wouldn't be surprised if they have a "Corporate Office" in the Bahamas.

4. Yes but ...

Yes but most of them will be foreigners on H-1B and LZ-1 Visa's. Don't taking "going to hire" notices as seriously as "firing xxx workers".

Hiring is a long and expensive process. Plus, there is no guarantee that they are going to follow through. When they say they are going to fire, they fire and they do it with a vengeance.

Also be weary that IBM (I used to work for them) could be adding lots of temp and part time jobs. Microsoft does this bullshit all the time. Hell, they could even claim the Mexican illegals who clean the buildings as part of their "new hires".

When people are disposable, there is no relevance in hiring statistics.

6. Here's a link to a list @ the Lou Dobbs website
that lists cos. which are exporting US jobs. The blurb on the Dobbs website says, "'Exporting America': Click here for the list of companies that the 'Lou Dobbs Tonight' staff has confirmed to be Exporting America."

7. Those 4500 in the US....
Edited on Sat Jan-24-04 10:39 AM by kalian
will most likely be contractors...with pathetic "benefits" and
the worse possible hours (shifts). I know...I've been there...
I've heard from some friends that have remained within the
corporate environment that contractors now are no longer receiving
and bennies...nothing! They have to pay for it out of their own
money.

I tell you...IT workers should have unionized back in 95...but no,
since most were pathetic republicans that was unheard off. Well...
who is getting the last laugh now, eh?
