General Motors plans to start importing Chinese-built vehicles into the U.S. in 2011, according to an outline the auto maker has submitted to members of the U.S. Congress.

GM currently manufacturers vehicles in China for sale in Asia. But the company plans for the first time to ship some of those vehicles to the U.S. to save on manufacturing costs.

A summary of the plan, obtained by Dow Jones Newswires, shows that GM plans to import 17,335 Chinese-built vehicles into the U.S. in 2011. The imports from China would jump to more than 38,000 in 2012 and more than 53,000 in 2013, the document shows. Imports from other countries, including South Korea, Japan and Mexico, would also increase. The plan is part of a broader cost-cutting strategy by GM, which has said it intends to cut 21,000 manufacturing jobs in the U.S. while increasing imports into the country.

Those plans are being devised under the guidance of U.S. President Barack Obama’s auto-industry task force as part of GM’s restructuring.

A GM spokesman declined to comment Wednesday, saying that negotiations between the United Auto Workers union and the company are ongoing.

The plans are being strongly opposed by the UAW, which argues that the company, surviving on more than $15 billion in U.S. loans, shouldn’t be using taxpayer money to subsidize U.S. job losses.

Chinese imports could bring GM political troubles

DETROIT (AP) -- As thousands of General Motors workers await word on more U.S. plant closures, reports that the company plans to import Chinese-made vehicles to the U.S. have created a political problem for the automaker and the White House.

"GM should not be taking taxpayers' money simply to finance the outsourcing of jobs to other countries," Alan Reuther, the union's Washington lobbyist, wrote in a letter to U.S. lawmakers....

On Wednesday, Shanghai Securities News and other Chinese media reported that GM plans to begin exporting vehicles from China to the U.S. within two years, ramping up sales to more than 50,000 by 2014.

1. It won't be long before everyone is importing Chinese-made
cars. That's where things are going. Not a good thing, but a done deal.

5. GM
Nice, we see were are taxes are going. All these lost US Jobs. I lost my business of 14 years
last may because of cheap labor. So much creed we are eating ourselfs. $5.00 an hour living in tents will be next. I beleive all Americans should buy only US MADE Products which would stop all of this outsourcing. I will never buy a GM car the rest of my life.

6. Wait till you see ( I predict) used Chinese cars, world class stereo systems,
priced at $3000, parked around the edges of Wal Marts with bar codes to carry in to the cashier.

It's a natural.

WalMart gets to screw us twice.

7. That assumes GM is a viable company in 2011.
With a "recovery plan" like this, I expect it'll be forced into bankruptcy.

10. The Venerable Chevy Small Block
Is what made Me and My Whole Generation (I'm a 70's kid-Like the kid who drove the GTO in the Movie "Dazed and Confused") spend Thousands,Tens of Thousands,Hell sometimes what seemed like Millions of Dollars just to be able to turn this...

Into This...
http://www.streetrodderweb.com/tech/0607sr_01_z+blower_basics+small_block_chevy.jpg

And Cram it into This...
http://image.carcraft.com/f/12498967/ccrp_0812_01_z+1967_chevy_nova_twin_turbo+front_view.jpg

My point is simple. We not only bought GM automobiles by the train load,we started and supported hundreds, maybe Thousands of businesses from Drag Racing suppliers,Auto Parts stores,Small Manufactures,Machine Shops,Drag Strips,Restaurants,Gas Stations and Convenience Stores.
We created something that tho it needs a new fuel source, (Gasoline just isn't gonna cut it any more) That is not just gonna go away.

So I Beg Of You General Motors...PLEASE DO NOT BRING THAT JOB-GOBBLING CHINESE CRAP INTO THE U.S. AND TRY AND SELL IT TO ME AS A CHEVY!!! I WON'T BUY IT...I WONT DRIVE IT!!!

And if you do bring that Garbage from China into the U.S. and try to tell me its a "Chevrolet",I will after thirty years of buying your products...Buy a Ford!!

11. America was such a great country
before the corporations pwned government. Raygun started this, and Clinton cemented it even more than BushI could ever have dreamed. Just like BushII ruined America even more than Bin Laden could ever have dreamed.

14. More proof corporatists own key politicians in both parties. Bailout GM, strip
retirees/employees of benefits and move operations to China.
The people shouted, "We the people are dead, long live the corporation."

And the high priests of Mammon laughed about how easy it was to destroy the world's longest running, most successful experiment in democracy.

And the thirsty and hungry and sick and imprisoned and naked prayed to Mammon to have mercy on their wretched. miserable bodies because the people had lost the very soul of democracy,

16. The future of the U.S. is very scary.
How much longer will our economy last? 6 months? a year? We make NOTHING here and import everything. The days of the U.S. dollar are coming to an end.
