Does no one care that Saturn is being
closed? Seems like that should be bigger news than it has been.

1. I thought it was news a few months back, when the idea was first floated
Heck, I thought that the closure was already a done deal.

5. I do.
I had a new 1994 Saturn. It happened to be a lemon but maybe all of them weren't.

6. The brand has been on life support for years . . .
The quality started seriously downhill about 5 years ago (when they brought out a "crossover" that had nothing Saturn-like about it except the badge) and has slid even more since.

GM stupided Saturn into an early grave. I've owned three of 'em, liked each one, and will miss the brand.

33. Right. After GM invested hundreds of millions to start the brand they let it die.
They must have gone 5 years without a redesign of the basic Saturn. They put almost no effort into keeping competitive with it. No wonder they're having a tough time finding a buyer. I think a composite body car is a "dream" for consumers. As long as you keep maintenance up you could probably get a couple hundred thousand miles out of the car. YOu might have to replace a water pump and a fuel pump, but with no rust to worry about they could last a long time.

8. I bought like a 92 Saturn from a guy at work about 6 years ago. It was basic,
no power anything, stick, and he'd kept it immaculate. I'd gotten it for my second car since my other car was a gas hog. I LOVED that Saturn! The odometer stopped at 233,000 mi and it kept going. Nothing ever went wrong with it except minor probs here and there. It was getting so old that the fabric on the ceiling was beginning to shred and I stuck it back up with thumbtacks. My best friend visited me and said "gateley, let's get you a new car!" and I said NO WAY. I have never been so impressed by a car before, plus it was really fun to drive.

So yes, I was sorry to hear that because I was thinking of someday getting another if they came out with a hybrid. :(

20. I'm not sure if I would have enjoyed the stick here in hilly, traffic-logged Seattle,
but it was perfect for Clayton, NC! I'd beat anybody out of the hole!

Yeah, I can see where it might be a wee too snug for such a long journey -- I'm hoping you only had to make it once! :hi:

21. Nevada to Texas in a Saturn? That's just puddle jumping
I've travelled all over the US and Canada in compact and even sub-compact cars and never had any trouble with the space (although I did have to spend a bit of cash to fix up most of those klunkers at some time during a long trip!)

11. Several years back on one of my
car buying excursions, I test drove a couple of second hand Saturns, and was singularly unimpressed. They felt very tinny and cheap to me.

12. Long article in today's Times, but...
myself, I care but don't care enough to talk a lot about it.

Best car I ever had was a Saturn-- the LS1 started out as a Saab, was an Opel for a while, then brought over here and made the LS. Even though it wasn't true to the original Saturn idea, it showed what you could do as an international car company.

But, not only did they lose their way making cars, they lost it selling them. Nobody knew what it was.

13. Their bussiness model was to have them built by Renault...
and shipped in. So it would not have meant anything for American's building Saturns. Just another boondogle with people in outher countries building the car.

Good riddance.

14. OMG! Saturn is closed? I hope there are some watering holes on...
Pluto... or Uranus... What will they do with the rings? Garage sale?
Seriously, Saturn is non-union, and most of the Saturn's I have seen were crap... disposable cars... But closing American made cars does hurt... They will hopefully come up with other cars to build in those plants, and make em UNION plants...

15. How can they close Saturn?
The planet is uninhabitable and no one wants to live there
anyway.

I guess I don't see the big deal. We can still look at it and see the
pretty rings with a telescope. We just won't be able to get in.

Were we ever able to get in?

22. I care a little
My 1st truly new car was a Saturn and after it got totalled, I bought a similar one.

But I look at what lines GM did keep and I see that they still don't get it--not everyone wants a truck, suv or larger car, which seems to be what GM is focusing on.

Also--Saturn did come out with a hybrid Aura, one of my friends has one.

Finally--I thought what Penske wanted to do may have been an OK idea, companies like Renault, etc are leading the way in more sustainable cars--IMO.

34. Stupid not to. Imo~ Of course my second gen. Saturn sedan has only lasted 15 years and well
over 200,000 miles. (You wouldn't believe the amount of coffee spilled inside that thing and down the console where all the electric is... Not to mention the fact that I walked away from a 40+ mph head on that my Saturn saved me from, and it's still going strong after a couple grand worth of repairs..)

Greatest car EVER!
(Never had the dealer work on it. Just my local genius greasmonkey.)

28. Middle Tennessee is in shock...
Many people are going to be out of good jobs. Not that I think pouring more automobiles onto the roads is the long-term economic solution, but a lot of families here just got a splash of cold reality.

30. When they launched Saturn..
... I was sure they would just be some more GM shit.

Much later, I had an opportunity to get to know the cars. The 90s and early 00 SL and SC series cars are excellent, well thought out, reliable, economical vehicles.

Count on GM to trip over their own dingus, again.

37. GM has cancer. And we need a new drug. Not managerial group-think
Saturn was supposed to stop that, and Roger Smith was such an unlikely source for that. But ya can't lick it around the edges and expect to get the job done. It's time we do to the Japanese what they did to us. ie: Reverse engineer THEIR car making, and improve quality and productivity.

36. Sad to see Saturn close
I had high hopes that Penske would take control but well that isn't going to happen.

We own a 2003 VUE and a 2007 Outlook. LOVE both vehicles. VUE is great on mileage the Outlook not so much.

GM doomed the Saturn when they lumped them into the cross-over craze.
