Bank of Canada governor wants a single currency
http://209.47.1.199/infomart/20030808/0/20030808.001.73.html

OTTAWA - A common currency for Canada and the United States could make economic sense if and when the two countries have a common market for goods, services, capital and labour, Bank of Canada governor David Dodge says.

...

Tearing down trade barriers globally, but first within Canada and North America, would encourage a more efficient economy, greater opportunities for Canadian entrepreneurs and workers, and higher living standards for Canadians, he said.

Leave Canada's economy at the whims of whatever idiot the Republicans manage to put in power (by whatever means)? You've got to be kidding. I've already emailed my MP asking that he be charged with treason.

"if and when the two countries have a common market for goods, services, capital and labour"

3. I just don't get it
Why do some Canadians -- blessed with one of the best qualities of life in the world, as ranked by the U.N. -- seem so intent on following the United States down the sewer?

Ohwait, I think I get it. Canadians believe in equality, equal opportunity, fairness, community, and citizenship. Some of Canada's fat cats want to get fatter, just like their U.S. brethren do. Silly things like equality just get in the way.

7. It's becoming crazier
New World Order, One World Government, homogenization of
countries, PNAC, BFEE, G8, G20, all of the various religious freaks.

It sounds not only scary but BORING! Why would anyone
want the entire world to be the same? That's sick.

OTOH, strictly from a dispassionate view, it is interesting
to watch them operate.

8. the right wing has been pushing this issue
for 40-some (or more?) years now.

i didn't realize the liberal party had become so right wing as of late, however. or am i mistaken (i'm going under the assumption that the Bank of Canada governors are political appointees?)

10. Canada is not fond of this idea
Touches a little too close to the sovereignty (or the lack thereof)nerve. I figured the moron in chief would play this card, though. The Loonie is still significantly lower than the Greenback.

Canada + US should do this only when both are threatened by the Euro. It's stupid for the Bush administration to try to artificially raise the Loonie and deflate the Greenback but that would put the US in competition with Canada.

It's better if the US and Canada work together and sell more volume to the euro. US-made good export through Canada to Europe when applicable to avoid tariffs. And vice versa for Canadian goods. Who cares if the euro is higher than the separate North American currencies -- we need the business transactions and they may buy US-made . Don't achieve the same objective with less work -- achieve it the slower, longer way because it generates productivity in the economy while it works to equalize the Loonie and Greenback in a decade or so.

When both the Loonie and Greenback are closer together, implement the North American common currency. Now's just not a good time to do adopt a common currency -- it'll produce economic stagnation in 4 or 5 years.

Canada and the US need to make full use of the separate entities of their currencies right now and use that to gain common economic momentum. Neither country is ready for it and we could end up screwing ourselves big time in terms of economic stagnation and no way out.
