Burton ends snowboard manufacturing in Vermont.

South Burlington-based Burton Snowboards is moving its manufacturing facility to Austria, affecting 43 jobs locally.

The Burton Manufacturing Center is slated to close in June. Though Burton started building boards in Vermont in 1977, the company has been manufacturing snowboards in Austria for more than 25 years.

The Vermont facility currently produces "premium snowboards," including four used by Olympians who medaled in Vancouver in February.

Research and development work will remain in Vermont, said the company.

According to a news release from the company, it costs "significantly more" to manufacture a snowboard in Vermont.
