Aussies among the world's 'hardest workers'
Sydney - Forget the image of the laid-back Aussie lifestyle, Australians now work more hours than Americans or Japanese and rank as the hardest-working people in the developed world, according to a new book.

The reputation of heavy drinking Australians is also debunked by figures showing alcohol consumption has dropped dramatically since 1980 and the country now guzzles below average amounts of wine and beer.

"Australians are now the hardest workers in the developed world. Hard to believe, but true," Ross Gittins, co-author of the book How Australia Compares, wrote in the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper on Saturday.

1. I have a hard time believing Aussies work harder than Japanese

Most of the male Japanese office workers I know put in 10- or even 12-hour days (not counting the mandatory bar-hopping after work). Meanwhile, my Aussie friends tell me that their country is still very laid back.

3. The Asian countries are famous for their hard work and dedication!
I would have to say that the laziest workers must come from *'s home town.

Unless A LOT has changed in the last few years since we were there, that's a bunch of hogwash. The Ozzies we met in the months that we were there thought very little of taking a "sickie" (and they had a lot more of them than we do) and I don't recall too many routine 50-60 hour weeks for city work. Plus, everyone has health care and Uni is more or less paid for- graduates aren't coming out of school with $30,000+ in debt.

Given the opportunity, I'll take the "hardest working" Ozzie lifestyle any day!
