Michigan's Improved Economy To Bring State An Added $429 Million In Revenue

LANSING -- A healthier Michigan economy is churning more tax revenue than was expected and will produce a $429-million windfall for the state this fiscal year, economists agreed Monday.

Another $234 million in extra revenue was predicted for 2012 -- money that will be up for grabs between lawmakers and Gov. Rick Snyder as they haggle over next year's budget. It means a $1.4-billion deficit that Gov. Rick Snyder faced when he took office in January could be cut to about $740 million.

Don't spend the bonus yet, cautioned state budget director John Nixon.

"It's good news; it's a long time we've been waiting for this," Nixon said. "But to say it's a huge windfall that's going to solve all our problems is not accurate."
