Gawd I love the IRS!
This is a true story.

I occasionally have to pay estimated taxes. When I prepared my 2003 1040, I forgot to include one of my 2003 estimated tax payments in the 1040 and I send it in with the mistake in my calculations.

Yesterday, I get a notice from the IRS, basically saying "you owed us X" but you paid us "X+Y" - Expect a check in the next 6 weeks for Y.

I honestly would never have caught my error, but either the computers or the geeks at the IRS found it and will be sending me an unexpected refund check.

Now that is good government!

2. I'm amazed-I made a small math error once and they-----
didn't notify me for 2 years. The interest and penalty doubled what I originally owed.

If they had caught it right away,as they did with you,I wouldn't have owed so much.

I depise the IRS.

4. Yeah, but once I over paid the IRS (accidentally paid the same
estimated tax payment twice -- the bank was authorized to make the payment and did, I was unaware that they had) and the IRS did refund the extra payment minus a $60.00 fine for having overpaid... :eyes:

8. uhh, you're gonna have to expain that "fine" for overpaying
i'm willing to bet it was not a fine but rather a fee for returning your estimated tax payment.

don't gripe too much about the fee, at least they LET you get it back. if i inadvertently double paid my credit card bill, they would not just cut a check back to me. if i had a credit balance, they would, but only after sitting on the funds for at least 3 weeks (i know, i've done this); but, if i did NOT have a credit balance, they would only let me get the money "back" by using a super high interest cash advance check.

if i double pay my mortgage, they would most definitely not return the cash. the best i could hope for is that they would apply it to the next month's payment so i wouldn't owe next month as well. but they would not return cash.

9. I love the IRS
I wish they would do that with me, I paid a little under 3 million in taxes this year.
