Virginia drivers flocking hybrid, alternative fuel wheels

RICHMOND, Va. -- With one-quarter of a million hybrids and alternative fuel vehicles on the road, Virginians are in the passing lane when it comes to seeking cheaper transportation fuels.

Virginia ranked 11th nationally in 2006 for the number of hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicles on the road, the Alliance for Automobile Manufacturers reports.

As for hybrids, however, the state ranks only behind California.

In 2006, nearly 240,000 hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicles took to Virginia roads, a 21 percent increase from the year before, according to a study conducted for the alliance by R.L. Polk and Co.
