Dominican Government to spend RD$53.5B in 25 hydroelectric dams

SANTO DOMINGO. - The Dominican Government plans to spend RD$53.5 billion to build 25 hydroelectric dams to manage the water in different regions, said on Wednesday National Hydraulic Resources Institute (INDRHI) director Frank Rodriguez.

He said the constructions are part of the National Hydrologic Plan, elaborated under the consensus of university experts, irrigation boards, unions, ex-INDRHI officials and representatives of the sector.

The official said over 100 people discussed the plan in INDRHI yesterday Tuesday, to incorporate their opinions. "The all agree that a long term program has to be applied to manage and regulate the water sot it isn’t lost to the sea, to power dams and conserve it for use at the precise moment."

Rodriguez, interviewed in the Telemicro Matinal 5 program, said the dams will be of different sizes and will also be used for irrigation, the drinking water and to generate electricity.

1. Christ I hate dams. But they'll probably save lives from climate change.
I hate this century.

2. Sounds like a good move ...
... get power, get water for people and get water for farming.

I only hope they can get the money without selling their souls to
the World Bank (or other similarly rapacious usurers).

Fingers crossed.

4. Pick your poison
Most electricity in the DR is generated by burning oil, which is probably getting a little expensive these days. They could switch to coal, I guess...
