Energy crisis in Italy gets worse

A drought across northern Italy has reached critical levels, with water restrictions already in place for in Piedmont and Emilia-Romagna. Water supply has been guaranteed for the Porto Tolle power station until the end of the month, which provides five percent of the nation’s energy supplies. But the Agriculture Minister Giorgio Alemanno says the law gives priority to domestic use and irrigation, and the power station will be shut down unless the situation improves. Italy’s main northern rivers including the Po and Piave rivers are at a critical low. The chairman of civil authority Guido Bertolato has reiterated that Italians are the highest consumers of water in Europe and prevalent attitudes must change.
