Japan nuclear body can't say when damaged plant to restart

VIENNA (AFP) — The Japanese nuclear safety body examining the damage at the world's largest nuclear plant in Japan, hit by a powerful earthquake in July, declined to say Thursday when the plant might re-open.

"At this moment, we can't say when the reactor could be restarted," said Akira Fukushima, a top official at Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA).

"What I can say now is that we have to be careful to do our investigations and our research," Fukushima told journalists.

The comments came as NISA presented a report on the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear plant on the sidelines of the UN nuclear watchdog's general conference here.

1. And in the meantime they're burning fossil fuels to make up for the lost electricity
The longer that reactor is off-line, the more people will ultimately die from CO2-induced global warming and air pollution.

5. Can you point to a release of radioactive waste from nuclear power that will kill billions?
Because that's what CO2-induced global warming is set to do over the next few decades. So yes, everyone who actually looks at the numbers does know that CO2 is deadlier than radiation.

9. "Co2 is deadlier than radiation." ???
Whatever, Dude....

It's a false choice, as I have said and will continue to say, but clearly your quasi-religious belief in nuclear power has circumvented your common sense....

12. Well, answer the question and prove me wrong

What is more dangerous right now, climate change or nuclear waste? What will most likely kill more people over the next century? Do you even believe in global warming caused by human release of CO2, and the damage it will do?

6. "Climate crisis? What climate crisis?"
Clearly, you have a totally unique grasp of environmental issues.

4. That's a problem with nuclear energy - these reactors may never come back on-line
They still haven't been able to inspect the reactors because there is so much damage.

2. They still haven't been able to open the reactors?
Edited on Fri Sep-21-07 12:15 AM by bananas
"The plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO), the world's biggest private power company, would open up the reactors by the end of October and the beginning of November, he added."

edit to add: They haven't been able to inspect the reactors yet - it's been over a month that it was reported "But the thoroughness of the report will likely be hampered due to damage to cranes within the structures that house the nuclear reactors. Due to the damage, it will be impossible to raise the heavy concrete lids that cover the reactor pressure and primary containment vessels."

7. TEPCO should hire Amory Lovins
That way, they can skip all the investigations and research and simply pronounce that it'll be open by Michaelmas.

True, the deadline will come and go without the reactor actually restarting, but I expect we can all blame Ronald Reagan for taking the containment dome off the Whitehouse or something.

10. He's $20,000/day. It is true that he'll sign off on anything you pay him enough for though.
Rio Tinto and Walmart have found it to fit well within their marketing budgets though.
