New Breakthrough Could Help Save Frogs from Extinction

Ribbit. Ribbit. Great News!

Scientists in New Zealand have discovered a possible cure to a deadly disease that has been destroying much of the world's population of frogs and other amphibians. Kim Griggs, BBC News science reporter, reports from Wellington, New Zealand of a Frog killer fungus 'breakthrough'. The breakthrough is chloramphenicol, which is a common antibiotic used for humans as an eye ointment. "The researchers found frogs bathed in the solution became resistant to the killer disease, chytridiomycosis. The fungal disease has been blamed for the extinction of one-third of the 120 species lost since 1980."

1. Frogs, bees, polar bears ...
I'm convinced that the world won't be happy until we kill off every last living thing on this planet. :-(

2. Just one problem
We are all living in a soup of chemicals that are weakening our immune systems (and other systems as well). The one fungus they successfully fight will be replaced with another.
The frogs are simply vulnerable because of their weakened immune response as are tress that are infested with fungus and insects, deer with wasting disease, etc.

All the "cides" kill their targets by attacking systems shared by most living things but the assumption was made that the dose would be so small it would not hurt large animals and humans. But the testing is based upon the exposre to that one "cide" at one exposure - not a real life experience.

3. I had a prime example of what a weakened immune system will do.
It sparked an outbreak of Shingles.

5. I'm much better thanks. Honey bees is anothe example where a weakened
immune system made them vulnerable to mites.
