Democratic Leaders Poised to Sabotage Hope for Renewable Energy
Edited on Thu Nov-15-07 02:06 PM by Maestro
I am at a loss. If the dems will not stand up and fight for the environment as Al Gore is trying to do, who will? We really need to show support in the form of incentives to help this industry become more available to more people. The corporatocracy has gotten to Reid and Pelosi apparently. I really hope they do not do this.

Last Thursday, Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid said that they would jettison the renewable energy provisions in both the House and Senate versions of the 2007 energy bill in the interest of passing a bill before the Thanksgiving recess begins on November 17.

Republicans have been holding up action on the bill for months now, refusing to participate in conference committee meetings to reconcile the House and Senate versions. The big sticking points for Republicans have been support for renewable energy and ending billions of dollars in subsidies for oil companies. Democrats would like to use the oil subsidy money to support solar and wind power.

Representatives of the renewable energy industry were dismayed by the Democrats' abandonment. "This is basically Congress delivering an early Christmas present to the American public -- and it's a lump of coal," said Rhone Resch, president of the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA). "We are feeling disgusted because this energy bill goes right back to maintaining the status quo."

The renewable energy provisions in the bill come in two forms: a Renewable Electricity Standard that requires utilities to supply 15 percent of their electricity from renewable sources like solar and wind, and tax provisions, including a production tax credit for wind power and a tax credit to encourage investment in solar power equipment.

While the Renewable Electricity Standard would be a new federal program (31 states already have some kind of renewable mandate), the tax incentives for solar and wind would continue programs already in place. Losing these tax breaks would be devastating to the renewable energy industry, said solar lobbyist Scott Sklar of the Stella Group: "It will cause sales and investment to implode."

9. Oil companies are hurting, doncha
know..that must be why they have to charge over $3.00 a gallon for gas and raising. I read their big OIL executives need more bonuses, too, to raise their standard of living into which oil sultans are entitled.

7. Exactly.
Big Oil lobbyists got to them apparently and I am unfortunatley "represented" by Joe Barton who has taken more money from Big Oil than any other congress person currently serving. Kay Baily Hutchison and John Cornyn are close on his tail.

14. They absolutely cannot keep the genie in the bottle.
The world is screaming ahead with developments. Even our own corporations in conjunction with other foreign companies, are forging alliances in the renewable arena. Maxell and Honda.

The demand is going to railroad right over these codgers.

Bring it on. Your years of sandbagging are over. Get the hell out of the way.

16. I have even tried to do my small part.
I have switched electric companies in my area. I now pay this company to produce electricity that it puts into the Grid. I also recycle aluminium, paper, cardboard, glass and plastic bags.

18. You'd think that with global warming
and gas reaching $4.00 a gallon by the spring that we would be more than ready to turn the corner. I am really wanting some of the congresscritters to show some integrity here in this matter but it looks like I am sadly mistaken.

20. Good for you.
My rep in the House in Smokey Joe Barton who has taken the most money from Big Oil, well over a $1,000,000, so contacting him is an exercise in futility but I have tried nonetheless. In the Senate, I have Kay Baily Hutchison and John Cornyn and both of them rank in the top 5 for taking money from Big Oil. I'm screwn.
