Now, this is some good sh#t!!!
From Sewage, Added Water for Drinking - NY Times - November 27, 2007
By RANDAL C. ARCHIBOLD

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. — It used to be so final: flush the toilet, and waste be gone. But on Nov. 30, for millions of people here in Orange County, pulling the lever will be the start of a long, intense process to purify the sewage into drinking water — after a hard scrubbing with filters, screens, chemicals and ultraviolet light and the passage of time underground.

On that Friday, the Orange County Water District will turn on what industry experts say is the world’s largest plant devoted to purifying sewer water to increase drinking water supplies. They and others hope it serves as a model for authorities worldwide facing persistent drought, predicted water shortages and projected growth.

The process, called by proponents “indirect potable water reuse” and “toilet to tap” by the wary, is getting a close look in several cities.

1. i think it should be called common sense.
when there were less of us we could count on nature cleaning up and recycling the water.

11. It IS common sense. And if people don't like the way it tastes, they can
use more common sense and buy a Brita filter so they can carbon filter it to improve the taste.

I've used a Brita filter for over 10 years because of our crappy-tasting over-chlorinated water here in Lost Angeles.

3. Probably would be a good time to
start thinking about the way we do our "business". I'm sure there are alternatives to using potable water to dispose of our waste. I'm sure it would be a bit less convenient, but it's something that would be good for the planet I suppose.

4. There are alternatives, i.e. "gray water" systems
that utilize water from sinks / laundry etc. in toilets

9. "Gray water" is sink, shower, dishwasher and clothes washer water....
Composting toilets are the answer for the poop.

Even if Californians can't see their way to drinking this shit, they could use it to offset 50% of their total water use by using it for lawns and landscaping. However, that would entail a gray water system on each and every house or neighborhood systems. Then again, they're going to have to do something big if they want to continue to live there.

5. Making Water From Thin Air
"A company that developed technology capable of creating water out of thin air nearly anywhere in the world is now under contract to nourish U.S. soldiers serving in Iraq.

The water-harvesting technology was originally the brainchild of the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which sought ways to ensure sustainable water supplies for U.S. combat troops deployed in arid regions like Iraq."

7. This technology has been around for a while...
there is a company in Australia that's been doing it for a while now. The concept is based upon de-humidifying the air and adding water filters to make it drinkable.

6. I know the water CAN be purified.
But I just don't trust that they will be getting it right. There are problems now with water purity starting from far less corrupted sources.

10. Reverse osmosis, ozone and UV treatment are all useful as final treatments.
But yeah, it's just a matter of time until someone gets lazy and people are poisoned.

They're not looking for "pristine" water, they're just looking to meet the EPA standards. And that's not saying much.
