Rate and fuel rises hit urban fringe
"urban fringe." I'll add it to the list, with "exurbs," and "asteroid belt," etc.

Griffith University's index of Vulnerability, Assessment for Mortgage, Petrol, Inflation, Risks and Expenditure (VAMPIRE) showed that between 2001 and 2006 the vulnerability rose for people in outlying areas.

"Areas that were not populated in 2001 that have since been developed all ended up with the highest vulnerability rating," researcher Jago Dodson said.

He said Queensland did not seem to be doing a lot to ensure that newly developed areas were not highly exposed to the increasing costs.

1. Jim Kunstler has been hammering away at this for years
Sprawl, the subdivision in the middle of what used to be a corn field, the long commute; these are the essence of unsustainability. It doesn't take an urban planning degree to figure it out.

2. "asteroid belt" is a Kunstler phrase.
