The Story of Stuff
From its extraction through sale, use and disposal, all the stuff in our lives affects communities at home and abroad, yet most of this is hidden from view. The Story of Stuff is a 20-minute, fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns. The Story of Stuff exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues, and calls us together to create a more sustainable and just world. It'll teach you something, it'll make you laugh, and it just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life forever.

1. wow! 99% of 'stuff' is in the trash 6 months after you buy it
I can't remember the last time I bought 'new' clothes

I shop thrift stores exclusively for clothing and most of my shoes

I buy used furniture and fix it up, I drive one 5 year old car and one 16 year old car

I must hate Amerika eh?

you know why I rarely buy new 'stuff'??? i hate hate hate those awful plastic bubble packages

I even got some additional christmas lights I wanted at the thrift store yesterday

my old fake tree will be celebrating it's 15th holiday this year

but I *did* buy an ornament new. we buy one every year so Hallmark got some cash

and now I'm feeling guilty :hide:

even my christmas gifts this year are used books, 'vintage' paperweights and crystal

2. what You said!
I'm also proud of how little "stuff" I consume. I break my rule for cd's and movies but that's about all, I'll go digital with that soon I hope.

And used books are the best gifts to get! I don't drive but I can order old books from Alibris for 2 or 3 dollars each, I feel great about giving those kinda gifts. Luckily since everyone I know is growing older/wiser they don't expect Stuff from me anyway.

3. my hubby was talking about a book that he read over and over
the year he got out of high school and took to the Army with him

I found a (fairly rare) copy for him

it'll blow his socks off

and my dear stepmother doesn't need any more 'stuff' so I set up an account with a coffee roaster in her town who will keep her in coffee all year

4. That is really incredible - I knew the information before, but the way it is
put together here is really an eye-opener. Thank you!

5. Totally agree!
That video is a superb illustration of the different aspects that are often
discussed and known but by bringing them together like that it makes a real
impact.

Too late to recommend but this certainly needs a kick for visibility!

:hi:
