A map of Europe's High Speed Rail web
Someone on another forum I go to pieced this together, and it looks very impressive:

Dashed lines are under construction, and black indicates regular lines with high speed trains providing local service. The map missed Finland's sizeable network, and it's impressive how Sweden is building a line into the tundra.

Now, if only North America had 1/3 of that, it would go a long way to reducing auto dependency...

2. Some people do not understand
that wise investments in transportation add value to communities. In the US transportation infrastructure decisions are based on short-term profits under the guise of providing convenience and individual choice. That's why we keep building more freeways.

3. Well, we actually have a fair number of railroads

But not a lot of high-speed rail.

4. Amen. K&R.
I would like to note that the map of France is a pretty good measure of how useful nuclear energy is in transportation.
