List green things to burn in your fireplace.

Got any more?

6. Take your pick

I know coffee and peanut shells are cleaner than wood in the chimney. Got examples of cooking etc...?

9. No idea -- I just saw your post on the front page and was curious where you were going with the idea
I use my coffee grounds, tea bags, etc for compost in the garden. Never occured to me to burn them.

3. Careful
Some things burn hotter than others, leave different kinds of residue, etc. Chimney fires are a wee bit scary, to say the least.

13. Chimney cleaner log
Edited on Sun Feb-17-08 04:46 PM by izquierdista
Here's a recipe for making your own chimney cleaner log to help between sweepings:

1 cup Ammonium phosphate fertilizer
1 cup candle wax, tallow, or other high melting fat
10 cups sawdust (or other small particulate combustible biomass i.e., dried coffee grounds, grass clippings)

Stir together Ammonium phosphate with sawdust until well mixed. Melt wax and add, stirring throughout. Pack firmly into 1/2 gallon wax paper container like the type used for milk or juice, tamping frequently to remove air. To use, make sure the fireplace has a good bed of hot coals and place cleaning log, container and all onto hot coals.

The cost of chimney cleaner logs at the store is ridiculous when you know the chemistry involved in making them! :bounce:

(On edit: Make sure it's Ammonium PHOSPHATE fertilizer. If you make a mistake and use Ammonium nitrate, it's KABOOM! :nuke:)

4. Would bird seed shells work?
I feed the birds on my patio and sweep up buckets of empty alpiste shells. Could they be mixed with some kind of binder and formed like coffee grounds to burn?

8. Not in a fireplace -- they coat the chimney with pitch and present a future fire hazard
So I was informed after I disposed of a Christmas tree that way (a bit at a time, of course).

10. You should have your chimney swept every season...
If you do, then an x-mas tree a year should be no big deal.
