Amazon nuts help fuel first biofuel flight
Sun Feb 24, 2008 8:22am EST

By Nigel Hunt

LONDON (Reuters) - Nuts picked from Amazon rainforests helped
fuel the world's first commercial airline flight powered by
renewable energy on Sunday.

A Virgin Atlantic jumbo jet flew from London to Amsterdam with
one of its fuel tanks filled with a bio-jet blend including
babassu oil and coconut oil.

British billionaire Branson said, however, it was unlikely the
nut of the wild growing babassu palm would play a key role as
airlines turn to renewable fuel sources to cut the industry's
greenhouse gas emissions.

"We did not want to use biofuels such as corn oil which were
competing with staple food sources," he said, adding he
believed algae produced in places like sewage treatment farms
were the most likely future source of renewable fuel for the
airline industry.

1. I've come to a conclusion about Richard Branson
That conclusion is that he is one of the more dangerous men on the world's environmental stage today.

The reason I say this is because he is utterly dedicated to preserving BAU through the growing substitution of ever-less-efficient energy sources. That path ultimately ends in the energy-bankruptcy of our civilization. He views our predicament through the same anthropocentric perception filters that the all green tinkerers use, without even realizing they are wearing them. Because he fails to understand the true nature and source of the problem, and is at the same time clever, energetic and persuasive, he promotes a massive diversion of time, money, resources and awareness from more productive paths. As a result he represents a direct threat to the rest of us.

I don't think may people will understand or accept this, because Sir Richard has successfully painted himself as a Green Capitalist. I'm just coming to understand myself the degree of danger he represents. I've been increasingly uncomfortable with his enviro-shenanigans, but this connection with biofuels suddenly turned my dimmer switch up to full.
