Midwest will be slightly cooler than neighbors, study suggests
"New global warming research suggests that the Midwest will be slightly cooler in the future than neighboring regions of the United States.

The predicted "hole" in the blanket of warmer temperatures comes from the cooling effect of increased rainfall, cloud cover and evaporation, said Zaitao Pan, an atmospheric scientist at St. Louis University."

"According to the study, moist air from a warmer Gulf of Mexico will drop more precipitation on the Midwest in the next 40 to 50 years. Water absorbed by the soil will evaporate, creating a shady cloud cover and reducing summertime air temperatures."

"Weather patterns over the past 25 years show that the Midwest is already experiencing the "warming hole," the researchers said. After looking at predicted changes, the team reviewed peak temperatures from 1975 to 2000 and discovered a slight cooling in an area that includes parts of Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Iowa."

(Sorry about the long link)

This jives with my experience here. Summers have been hot, but not unusually so, like many other parts of the country.

2. I hear ya RevCheesehead.
Around here we wear 2 sets of clothes in the summer. Sleeveless with a sweatshirt overtop, and the sweatshirt comes and goes all day.

4. Central Ohio swimming pools didn't get as much business this year
Seldom hit 85 and that translates into fewer trips to the pool/water park.
Altho it was nice not having to run the air conditioner this year...

5. Minnesota's summer was cooler than usual
and winter was warmer.

Meanwhile, Portland, Oregon had an unusual snowstorm in the winter and the second unusually hot summer in a row.

6. It's that ancient spaceship buried under the Driftless Area in SW Wis.
Kept the glaciers away, too.

But seriously, where I am in S. Central Wisconsin, the temperatures seem to be getting more 'moderate' over the last few years. Cooler summers and warmer winters. The weather this last week was so nice, it felt a little strange -- that might just be WI Weather Paranoia though (ie., "It's so nice right now, we're bound to have to pay for this in February." Lots of people around here seem to think good weather has a karmic 'price'...).
