VW to produce 235mpg car for 2010
As outrageous as the idea of a 1L/100km car sounds, more reports have emerged confirming the ultra-frugal car is in fact in development and that it could be on the market by as early as 2010. At last month’s Frankfurt Motor Show senior VW exec Ferdinand Piëch claimed the car would be available by the end of the decade and now CEO Martin Winterkorn has backed up the claim as well as providing some of the production details.

First up Winterkorn stressed that the 1-Liter “would not be a best seller” and thus will only be produced in limited numbers. Its body will be constructed from plastic and magnesium and its power source will be a one-cylinder engine displacing just 0.3L. Top speed will be 120km/h and consumption will fall around the 1L/100km mark (235mpg), reports AFX.

3. I am under 5'6" but
over 130, I still think I would fit comfortably in that car.

4. if it actually looks as cool as that in reality, sign me up for one ...
(I also like the "Smart Car" - France)

However, I liked the style of the PT Cruiser ... until I saw one in person ...

5. If we want autonomous, comfortable personal transportation ...
... this is the way to go.

And we may not have much of a choice in a few years. The price of petroleum doubled in just the last year.

Short of some major changes, car culture is coming to an end.

7. 300cc's?
My lawnmower has a bigger motor. My motorcycle has more than twice the displacement. Why a one-cylinder? It'll vibrate.

Even so, I find 200+mpg to be implausible. It takes a certain amount of energy to "lift" a load to a given speed, and a car (no matter how aerodynamic) has to do it multiple times, quickly. A loaded two-seater probably can't weigh much less than 3/4 ton.

9. Depends on the size of the "load" I guess ...
> A loaded two-seater probably can't weigh much less than 3/4 ton.

... but as the article said "Its body will be constructed from plastic
and magnesium" I'd guess your estimate is a bit high ...

:hi:

(Now with two Texans maybe ...? :hide: )

13. Concept car did it at Autobahn speeds
Was a couple years ago that the VW 1L Concept car was driven around Germany. Getting just that 1 L of Diesel for every 100kM driven. I doubt this will be in North America anytime soon, but seing it in Europe is not surprising.

16. I think I will order the "high performance" version - 1 whole liter!
Seriously, if gasoline keeps going the way it has been this will definitely sell. What worries me is not so much the $4.00 gas this summer, but what about next year and the year after that. the demand for fuel from China and India is just going to keep growing...and growing.

20. I don't know how the VW engines works,
but here's an engine type that has much lower vibration than "standard" engine designs:

Revetec Engine

Maybe VW is using a similar method?

11. “would not be a best seller”...
well, either he's really naive or blatently stupid.

give the current rise in gas prices and the predicted price for oil for the next year, I see these things selling like hot cakes.

Too bad Corbin went bankrupt.

21. Here's VW's official site
1 Litre Car

I remember this part when it was mentioned on Treehugger.com last year:
"To save weight, it is made of carbon composites and is not painted."
