Hydro-Quebec Awards $1.5 Billion (US) In Wind Power Projects

CALGARY, Alberta, - Hydro-Quebec awarded C$1.9 billion ($1.5 billion) in wind-power projects to two groups this week in a massive push to position itself as Canada's biggest buyer of the renewable energy source.

Provincially owned Hydro-Quebec, one of North America's top electricity generators, awarded 990 Megawatts of wind farm projects in to Cartier Wind Energy and Northland Power Income Fund (NPI_u.TO: Quote, Profile, Research) .

Eight developments will be built in eastern Quebec over six years starting in 2006 in what is being called the wind industry's largest such single award. The projects will include 660 wind turbines, supplied by General Electric (GE.N: Quote, Profile, Research) unit GE Energy.

Wind farms and turbine enclosure assembly plants will be located in the municipality of Matane and in Gaspesie-Iles-de-la-Madeleine, Hydro-Quebec said."
