A Governmental "Project"
For real progressive and environmental change in our climate, transportation, and energy sectors I believe we need government subsidized projects similar to the Apollo Project of going to the Moon.

But alas...the American sheep would be told that is "Socialism" and rebel; meanwhile 2.7 TRILLION tax dollars are in the process of being thrown away into the Imperialistic Crusade to secure Iraqi oil for multi-national corporate oil giants.

Is there any hope?

1. Of course there's hope.
Unfortunately, there's no hope for what most environmentalists are hoping for -- a change of human direction that will stop, postpone or alleviate the declining trajectory the world is on.

The real hope is that enough people will wake up and start making better individual choices so that a few more people with better value sets will survive the coming changes and seed the next cycle of civilization. That appears to be happening already, it's the most hopeful thing that's happening, and it's a project that each of us can take part in.

3. The ability to go to the moon is part of the problem
The more we give ourselves the ability to do things that we are not physically able to do alone, the more we impact the environment. Hunting with sticks increases our impact on the environment. Going to the moon increases our impact on the envrionment. Subsidizing multiple government projects for climate, transporation, and energy will increase our impact on the environment. The larger the scale of capitalism, socialism, or any ism, the more we impact the environment.

4. I don't think the government can do it.
With the moon program, lift-off was going to occur in one place only. The goal was to get to one moon only. The government is pretty good (well, it used to be) with projects that have such specific givens and goals. Environmental and energy issues are too regionally diverse for a centralized governmental entity to handle. Regional environmental and energy issues need solutions that work for that region, and a centralized program is anathema to this, in my experience. I'm not sure I'm being clear about what I mean here, so let me try again. If the voters of California accept and are willing to pay for an environmental measure for their state, I do not think the feds should be able to say, "no, you can't do that, because that won't work for NY." In my opinion, that's what would happen.
