Drivers mixing ethanol with gas to save money -- fucking up their cars
Auto manufacturers warn that ethanol can corrode fuel lines and damage hoses, seals and the fuel pump in cars not made to carry ethanol. That can lead to bad gas mileage, poor performance and may even affect the vehicle computers that warn of problems.

The EPA says it can damage emission control devices.

Yet with the price for a gallon of gas hitting a string of record highs this year, motorists are paying little heed, even at the risk of voiding their warranties.

1. During WWII and rationing
my mother dated a fellow with more money than brains. He got around gas rationing by running his car on hair tonic.

He had to replace engines, but at least his social style didn't get cramped.

Expect people to try to run their cars on anything combustible as gasoline gets more and more expensive.

3. Hmmm...
In our current situation, anybody with enough money to throw engines at a problem won't have the problem to begin with, since they'll be able just pay for gasoline. It's the people who can't afford new engines who I assume are ruining them with ethanol.

4. That's true, but it's the same psychology
at work, that of getting the short term gain of being able to get to work so we have enough money to feed the beast and just hoping it hangs together long enough for us to find a job closer to home.

5. i've driven around with some e85 in my cars, first a 92 Olds, now a Mercury Sable 04
Nothing's been damaged here. I've run about 60-40, 50-50 or so.
Too much e85 all at once can clog up the fuel pump and filter. But gradually working it in is not harmful. I think any car that has fuel injection has ethanol proof hoses, seals etc. Most of these warnings date back to the early 80s.

BUT....If you're gonna do e-85 and no blend in a not-flex-fuel car, you'll probably get a check engine light because the emissions system thinks the engine conditions won't let the engine work properly. Also your fuel injection computer may not have a wide enough injector to accommodate the instructions of the computer to deliver more fuel to the engine. Occasionally that's the computer's fault but usually it's the injectors so it's wise to check with your mechanic.

In the book linked below, folks in South Dakota calling themselves the Foreign Oil Independence League(FOIL) have run a few hundred cars on e-85 without adjustment and had no troubles. They are not google-able folks, Orrie Swayze and Al Kasperson.

(There's a website by that name FOIL.ORG (another ethanol booster) but it's a different guy.)

See below for more on this.

9. "I think any car that has fuel injection has ethanol proof hoses, seals etc"
Any evidence to back up that assertion?

6. I heard about this from my mechanic
When I had problems with my gas blower, I had to take it in and he said to avoid ethanol/blend gas.
Problem is,, there is only TWO gas stations in town that are safe. I wonder what will happen too all the gas blowers/weed eaters when all the gas has Ethanol+ ?

8. I'd like to see them come back into fashion
if only for the noise-pollution aspect. That, and reel mowers.

10. Send that guy in the picture
to my house, so long as he will cut my grass for free!

I CAN'T use a reel mower due to physical limitations, and I can't afford to pay someone to mow it either!

11. That would be fantastic
but while being both more practical AND efficient at getting the job done, unfortunately, it's not as macho as wagging a big, noisy polluting machine around and blowing dirt back and forth from one yard to another.
