Things grow better with Coke
John Vidal
Tuesday November 2, 2004
The Guardian

Indian farmers have come up with what they think is the real thing to keep crops free of bugs.

Instead of paying hefty fees to international chemical companies for patented pesticides, they are reportedly spraying their cotton and chilli fields with Coca-Cola.

In the past month there have been reports of hundreds of farmers turning to Coke in Andhra Pradesh and Chattisgarh states.

But as word gets out that soft drinks may be bad for bugs and a lot cheaper than anything that Messrs Monsanto, Shell and Dow can offer, thousands of others are expected to switch.

Maybe tip for organic-minded Colombian coca growers??????????

4. I've read that sugar really stimulates soil microbe activity
That's beneficial to plants in multiple ways. It would also explain accelerated breakdown of mulch.

2. It's also really good when you're prepping your garden in spring
If you've laid down straw mulch over your beds for the winter and want to get things up and running in a hurry in March or April, Coke provides an easy way.

Get a two-liter bottle of regular Coke, shake the hell out of it and then puncture the lid with an awl or icepick. Spray the straw mulch with Coke, and wait about five days. You've never seen mulch break down so quickly, and it saves you a lot of work chopping it in with a hoe.

3. You can use Coke to kill slugs and snails. Instead of beer
put some coke in a saucer under the philodendron/petunias and by the morning you'll have a plateful of dead escargots, bloated by the sugar and killed off by the all the other magic ingredients
