Burn Up (BBC)
Just a heads-up for those in the UK - there's a 2 part global warming conspiracy thriller on BBC TV this week. Don't know if it'll be shown in the States - you might have to email BBC America.
Here's The Guardian's synopsis....

Burn Up
(Pt.1 - Wed 23rd July; BBC2 9pm)
In a twisting thriller that grapples with our dependence on oil, Rupert Penry-Jones stars as Tom McConnell, an oil company chief who cheerfully thanks his lucky stars that he's in a boom industry. It apparently dawns only gradually on McConnell that something called global warming might threaten the entire edifice of human civilisation. In a thriller scripted by Simon Beaufoy (The Full Monty), shadowy forces marshalled by American fixer Mack (West Wing's Bradley Whitford) oppose McConnell's journey towards eco-friendliness. Neve Campbell co-stars.

(Pt.2 - Friday 25th July; BBC2 9pm)
The second part of the thriller focuses on the Kyoto 2 conference in Calgary, presumably chosen to highlight the CO2-belching dirtiness of Canada's oil sands extraction industry. The British government wants a deal to cut emissions and - as with oilman McConnell's journey to the green side, some suspension of disbelief will help here - has sent in its own fearsomely talented fixer (Marc Warren, clearly having enormous fun) to counter nasty American Mack.

BBC America has been on my shit list since they cancelled MI-5, guess the topics were a little too real for them in the USA? :eyes:

Edit: No, we've got such quality programming as Love Me, Love My Do (some dumbass show on hairstyling) and then another reality show.

BBC America has gone into the crapper!! :hurts: No BBC2 here.

2. M1-5 was cancelled in Britian long ago...
It played on A&E first and then went over to BBC America.

They really couldn't take it any further once Danny was offed and Tom was discredited and the woman, I can't remember her name, was sent packing to south America...

4. Oh, no, there is season 4-6 available!!
Edited on Mon Jul-21-08 05:22 AM by 48percenter
I've been renting it on NetFlix.

And if you haven't seen it season 4 is the most shocking yet! There are new characters since Danny was killed off, and Zoe went to South America. Bit of trivia, did you know that Matthew Macfayden is married to Zoe in real life?? And she had a baby, perhaps that's why they sent her to Peru or Columbia? AND, two new characters from season 4, Zafir (a real hottie!) and new gal Jo are married in real life. So much for not shitting where you eat. HAHA!!

I know way too much about MI-5. :eyes:

Yes, Spooks. MI-5 in US. Title 'Spooks' didn't go over very well in USA.

6. State Within has yet to be repeated as a broadcast here
but is probably available on our cable replay section FOC. Same applies to Spooks and some of the much earlier series of that are currently broadcast too on cable and freeview channels.

Series 6 of Spooks is available on amazon.co.uk but apparently not so on amazon.com as series 6 MI-5. Our stuff won't play in the USA in the absense of a multiregion DVD player etc unless you play using WMP.

I've got the DVD set of the State Within and that is available your side : http://www.amazon.com/State-Within-J-C-Kenny/dp/B000KF0DVQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1216637088&sr=1-1

9. I have a dual region DVD player :)
So for me, region codes are no biggie. I think we are going to break down and buy season 5-6 of MI-5 from amazon.uk. :D

10. I'd noticed they were cheaper as a pair.
Season 6 is very very good and I won't spoil it for you. Funny old world - I buy most of my DVDs and CDs from your side cos they're cheaper that way.

11. Great article on this. Can't wait for the DVD.
Even oilmen believe our planet is burning up, says Full Monty writer behind terrifying TV drama
By Simon Beaufoy

I am sitting in the office of a man who was, until recently, chief executive of one of the biggest oil companies in the world: a man who made his company billions of dollars. I listen, make the odd nervous note and reflect that it's been a long road since I wrote one of Britain's best-loved films, The Full Monty.

As a scriptwriter, I have met lots of powerful people, but my reaction is always the same. When I went to the Oscars, I sat next to a pleasant, elegant woman and chatted happily to her until somebody pointed out it was Claudia Schiffer. After that, I could not utter another word.

But today it isn't because I am star-struck that I am terrified; it is because the oil man is telling me the opposite of everything he should say. Over the tinkle of teacups, he is predicting the end of civilisation.

My friends give me uncomfortable looks about my new film, Burn Up, because I have a Cassandra-like reputation for writing fiction about things that later become fact.

14. On BBC iPlayer NOW!
I thought this was a really intriguing first episode, and can't wait for the concluding episode on Friday!

For those who haven't seen it, it's available for the next 7 days on BBC iPlayer (link below - I think you can view it from the States)......

Iplayer:- Burn Up

According to a Neve Campbellinterview in a Canadian magazine, there isn't much chance of it being picked up by an American network....

While "Burn Up" will air here on Global and in the U.K. on BBC, it has yet to land an American network deal. The subject matter likely cuts a little to close to the bone during a U.S. presidential election year when gas prices are soaring and American car companies - especially those that sponsor TV shows - are hurting.

"Networks are sometimes afraid of these topics depending on where their politics are," she says. "When you're making a piece like this, there's got to be balance. You want to give adequate and accurate information and not feel that it is just sensationalist."
