'LONDON, England -- Global warming will never bring a "doomsday scenario" a team of scientists says -- because oil and gas are running out much faster than thought.

The world's oil reserves are up to 80 percent less than predicted, a team from Sweden's University of Uppsala says. Production levels will peak in about 10 years' time, they say.

"Non-fossil fuels must come in much stronger than it had been hoped," Professor Kjell Alekett told CNN.'

*Ahem* At any rate: also according to the article, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is still backing its own figures, although the Uppsala team believes not only that the estimates are inflated, but that some Middle Eastern countries are exaggerating the size of their supplies.

The scientists also believe that both oil and gas production will start falling off after 2010.

do these people not want plastics in 50 years? Hell, even if you use hydrocarbons for fuel, burning them is the least efficent way to do that.... Oil companies, despite the party line, are coming around to the fact that they need to change if they wish to be financially viable past 2040.

Biomass is hydrocarbon fuel, but it is renewable. The biodiesel made from veg. oil that I use in my car is a hydrocarbon fuel. The carbon put into the atmosphere was taken out of the air by plants just months before.

IMO, hydrocarbon fuel is fantastic if it's renewable. People keep focusing on what substance to diss as 'bad', but the fuel's process is just as important.
