Question about ice from a Californian
What's up with that white rind around the melt puddle? What causes that, and what does it mean?

1. Wild-ass guess...
...wind (or a passing boat) has blown/spashed sea-water onto a layer of snow on top of the ice, and melted it - so the 'rind' is the actual ice.

Might be wrong.

3. That was one thought
Other thoughts were natural top-down melt, bottom-up melt, or a cavity under the snow/ice which collapsed slightly.

If there are boats rockin' in that puddle, we're all screwn. :o

4. I don't know, but here's a cool phenomenon you might see:
Because it's salty, sea water can drop below the freezing temperature of fresh water.

As a result, snow can land and even create drifts on the icy ocean and not immediately melt.

Perhaps something similar is happening here, or maybe frozen foam?

5. Frozen foam is an interesting guess
I suspect that unless the bottom of the puddle melted out it's probably mostly fresh water.

7. Or, absent the turbulence and motion of the water....
salty water bubbles might be able to crystalize?

8. Maybe
Like I said, I'm a Californian, and seeing ice on the beach in New Hampshire a few years ago was very odd to me. :D

6. I'd guess that it is just melting ice with lots of small perforations. nt
