McConaughey to plant son's placenta in orchard
Friday, August 8, 2008
(08-08) 18:21 PDT New York (AP) --

Matthew McConaughey says the birth of his son will help bring a little joy to others in the world someday. The actor kept the placenta from the July birth of his son and plans to plant it in an orchard, he tells CNN's "House Call with Dr. Sanjay Gupta" in interview scheduled to air in two parts Aug. 9 and Aug 16.

McConaughey says he hopes it will fertilize the land, a ritual long followed in several cultures.

"It's going to be in the orchards and it's going to bear some wonderful fruit," he says, according to an interview transcript. "When I was in Australia, they had a placenta tree that was on the river ... and all the placentas of all that tribe, all that clan, whatever aboriginal tribe that was, all the placentas went under that one tree and it was this huge behemoth of just health and strength.

"This tree was just growing taller and stronger above the rest of Mother Nature around it. It was gorgeous."

2. I can't think of any reason this is news...even in a celeb culture.
This just seems strange to me and I can't think of any reason we would need to know what he does with the placenta.

You should have been here when it felt it needed to tell the E&E forum all about Carla Bruni's love life.

It brings a certain - je n'en sais quoi - People magazine feel to the forum. We need that because well, sometimes we take things way to seriously and we all know that the issues of energy and the environment aren't serious.

All of them can be addressed in 20 second soundbites, because we don't need no stinkin' science in this forum.

Al Gore says...

3. Probably as good a use for it as any
better probably than grinding in the garbage disposal (heavy duty) and flushing into the sewage system.

6. ....or wrapping it up in layers of plastic as "hazardous waste"
and shipping it to a special landfill at great expense......

Don't some cultures EAT the placenta??
