Ted Stevens - Arctic Climate Breakdown "Serious", But Not Human-Caused
WASHINGTON -- "Warming of the Alaska Arctic at up to 10 times the rate of the rest of the planet is wrecking villages and melting glaciers and might make polar bears and ringed seals extinct, leading scientists told members of the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee on Tuesday.

Alaska Republican Sen. Ted Stevens, soon to be chairman of the committee, agreed that the problem is serious. But he does not accept the conclusion the scientists reached in their new high-profile report: that the driving force behind warming is people burning coal, oil and natural gas, the fuels that produce greenhouse gases that trap heat in the atmosphere. That put Stevens at odds with the current Commerce chairman, Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain, who declared that action is needed now to curb emissions of greenhouse gases. "Unless we address them, the people in Arizona are going to have the same problem as the people in Alaska face today," McCain said at the Tuesday hearing.

Stevens said there would be differences of opinion on what to do about the problem. "But I don't think there are going to be any difference of opinion that this change is taking place and we need to take some action," Alaska's senior senator said.

Stevens' spokeswoman, Courtney Schikora Boone, said the action Stevens is taking is to fund more research about climate change. McCain argued that a mountain of scientific evidence points to the burning of fossil fuels. But Stevens does not consider the matter to be settled. "If you look back at the history of the globe there's been so much cyclical global change. We want to make sure whether it is cyclical or solely man-made or if it is both," Boone said.

Stevens did greet the new report as welcome knowledge about climate change, as he listened to testimony from the scientists involved in putting it together. "I congratulate you on this report and look forward to reading it," Stevens told the scientists."

2. What a hoot!
Looks like it is too late anyway.
All you can do is sit back, shake your head in
amazement, amd watch the show.
What will get us first: nuclear war, AIDS, or
the fruit of environmental devestation?

8. It's Tom Lehrer time!

"We Will All Go Together When We Go"

When you attend a funeral,
It is sad to think that sooner or'l
Later those you love will do the same for you.
And you may have thought it tragic,
Not to mention other adjec-
Tives, to think of all the weeping they will do.
(But don't you worry.)

No more ashes, no more sackcloth,
And an arm band made of black cloth
Will some day nevermore adorn a sleeve.
For if the bomb that drops on you
Gets your friends and neighbors too,
There'll be nobody left behind to grieve.

<snip>

We will all go together when we go.
All suffused with an incandescent glow.
No one will have the endurance
To collect on his insurance,
Lloyd's of London will be loaded when they go.

<snip>

And we will all bake together when we bake.
There'll be nobody present at the wake.
With complete participation
In that grand incineration,
Nearly three billion hunks of well-done steak.

Oh we will all char together when we char.
And let there be no moaning of the bar.
Just sing out a Te Deum
When you see that I.C.B.M.,*
And the party will be come-as-you-are.

<snip>

Sounds pretty up-to-date for a song released in 1959, doesn't it?

9. LOL! We were just speculating that the cause is from the
heat off of crack pipes & marijuana pipes!

These people are so frickin' ignorant, I can't believe it! How can you stick your head in the sand to damned far & keep it there so damned long? Has half of America lost their frickin' minds?
