Thousands of dead squid wash ashore in Westport (Washington state)
Thousands of dead Humboldt squid, each weighing 30 to 40 pounds, washed ashore for reasons unknown. Locals and commercial fishing companies have come up with a way to take advantage of the rare phenomenon.

This is an invasive species from down south and an example of what happens when ocean ecosystems unravel.

6. Not really.
This happens every 4-5 years so it isn't uncommon. Most of the time the reason is this warm water species follows a warm current north then gets caught in cold water which gives them a shock and they die.

5. Heck, it's a big deal when they show up off the coast of SoCal.
Sounds like they got lured up north by unusual environmental conditions. And died. Oops.
