New owners call for tree to be left alone

http://www.ntnews.com.au/article/2008/11/13/15591_ntnews.html

BEN LANGFORD

November 13th, 2008

THE owners of a new kebab cafe in Darwin's CBD say they don't want a large mahogany tree near their heritage-listed site cut down.

But they need a solution for the tree's root, which is damaging the floor of the old CWA building that will house their cafe.

Nikitas and Nilufer Kavouklis have big plans for the site in Tamarind Park in the CBD.

But Nilufer Kavouklis, 36, said the root had lifted part of the floor and they could not start their business until it was fixed.

STUCK IN THE MIDDLE: Nilufer Kavouklis is not sure what to do. She likes the tree but doesn't want it to damage the building. Picture: BRAD FLEET

"We don't have any problem with the tree," she said.

"We never said cut down the tree."

1. Can't she incorporate the tree root into the
decor of the building somehow? Cut the floor out in that area and build something that's raised over top of it?
