Florida Gulf Coast University (2 MW) solar field awaits approval

FGCU's solar field proposal rolled through the Legislature last spring with little resistance.

Bids went out in early summer, firms quickly were interviewed and Florida Gulf Coast University hired the company Regenesis Power in the blink of an eye. Dignitaries broke ground just two weeks later.

FGCU plans to construct ground-mounted panels that will track with the sun's rays on 19 acres near the main entrance to campus. It also will install rooftop panels atop Alico Arena, Everglades Hall, the library, campus support complex and two parking garages.

All told, the $17 million solar power system will generate 2 megawatts of energy, or roughly 16 to 18 percent of the university's annual electricity.
