Minnesota's iconic moose are dying off
Scientists eye climate change as the primary reason the beloved animals are disappearing
By Tim Jones | Tribune reporter

It wasn't long ago that thousands of moose roamed the gentle terrain of northwestern Minnesota, affirming the iconic status of the antlered, bony-kneed beast from the North Woods. In just two decades, though, their numbers have plummeted, from 4,000 to fewer than a hundred.

They didn't move away. They just died.

The primary culprit in what is known as the moose mystery, scientists say, is climate change, which has systematically reduced the Midwest's already dwindling moose population and provoked alarm in Minnesota, where wildlife specialists gathered for a "moose summit" this month in Duluth.

"There's not a lot of opportunity to turn this around," said Mark Lenarz, a wildlife research specialist at the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. "Here in Minnesota, they have been weakened by climate change."

1. I was doing a wildlife survey for the Air Force in the late '80s at Thief River Falls, MN
and after having seen Alaska and Maine moose, I did not think they could get bigger until I saw the giant MN moose. Huge and beautiful animals. It was sugar beet and sunflower seed crop country, with hedge-rows/wind-rows every 2 to 3 miles, which seemed to be the only place a moose to find cover in those parts. The roads are a mile square, and the hunters would just stop when they saw a moose, and balance their rifles on the pickup truck bed side-rail, and take down the moose that was more often than not, just standing there looking straight at the shooter.

It's sad to hear they are gone now.

2. Are you sure Sarah Palin
hasn't been coming down there at night.

It's ironic that the name Sarah means laughing. I know when I heard she was the VP contender for the R's it was quite sometime before I could stop laughing.
