Energy Efficiency, Innovation, and Job Creation.

A new report, Energy Efficiency, Innovation, and Job Creation , by the Center for Energy, Resources, and Economic Sustainability (CERES) at the University of California at Berkeley, finds that decades of increasingly stringent environmental policies in California have not only lowered the level of carbon emissions in the state, but have also created about 1.5 million jobs with a total payroll of more than $45 billion. Projections for the future are more dramatic. The study, written by David Roland-Holst, forecasts that if California meets its current goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020 (per Executive Order #S-3-05) and improves energy efficiency by 1% per year along the way, the economic result will be 403,000 additional jobs and an increase of $76 billion in the state’s gross product.

ORNL CHP Report.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has released Combined Heat and Power: Effective Energy Solutions for a Sustainable Future , a new report highlighting Combined Heat and Power (CHP) as a realistic solution to enhance national energy efficiency, ensure environmental quality, promote economic growth, and foster a robust energy infrastructure. The report provides an in-depth discussion of current opportunities and challenges to more widespread national CHP deployment, and finds that if 20% of the United States’ generating capacity came from CHP sources, benefits would include annual fuel savings of 5.3 quadrillion Btu, a 60% reduction of the projected increase in CO2 emissions, and the creation of 1 million new jobs through 2030.
