Northwest contractor wins huge grant to make federal government energy efficient

by Abby Haight, The Oregonian

A Pacific Northwest mechanical construction and engineering firm praised by President-elect Barack Obama as a model for the nation for its energy efficiency leadership has received a federal grant worth up to $5 billion.

McKinstry Co. was one of 16 service companies to receive a U.S. Department of Energy energy savings performance contract, worth up to $80 billion, to design and build energy efficiency, renewable energy and water conservation projects at federally owned buildings and facilities.

The federal government is the single largest user of energy in the country. The contract, worth a maximum of $5 billion to McKinstry over 10 years, targets sustainability goals and greater environmental stewardship.

The award grew from Energy Secretary Samuel W. Bodman's Transformational Energy Action Management http://www.energy.gov/news/5300.htm">initiative to reduce energy use by 30 percent throughout the federal government nationwide.
