Fatal bear mauling recorded on tape;
OK, I understand this guy was a professional and all, but still...this definately sounds Darwinian theories in action. Even as a kid I knew that, even if it looked like one, they aren't teddy bears. Don't try and hug them.

The remains of Treadwell, 46, and Huguenard, 37, both of Malibu, California, were found Monday at Katmai National Park and Preserve on the Alaska Peninsula. Treadwell was known for approaching, even touching, bears in the wild.

1. Hate to say it
Because bears are maginificent animals and anyone concerned with their survival and health deserves some praise...

But I read this loony's book some years ago, and if he was a scientist, I'm Batman. Basically his "science" consisted of giving bears cute names and fantasizing about what they were thinking. And he was a menace to himself, his companion and the bears.

2. I have to agree
from what I understand, he was a bit of kook who had been repeatedly warned that his behavior was endangering the lives of himself AND the bears.

4. Which is an excellent point.
Even pack animals like wolves are more dangerous when the become "habituated" to humans. A healthy fear of people is one of the things that keeps them from coming into more conflict with us than they already do, and keeps the sctual "violent" interactions down to a bare minimum, and primarily instigated by us.

6. So then what was Linus Pauling thinking?
He became part of this group of scientists promoting "total peace" on the planet which involved everyone becoming non-violent vegetarian citizens of the planet and basically extended that "thinking" to the animal kingdom whereby animals themselves would cease to eat each other and lambs would lay down with the lions. WTF?

3. Sounds like territorial issues to me.
Bears aren't pack animals, the way gorillas are.
