Solar Store owners seeing strong consumer interest

TROY — Rodney Wiltshire’s unassuming retail spot on Route 2 is the only store in the state where customers can browse among solar panels, energy-saving light bulbs and a composting toilet in the same showroom.

Wiltshire, who opened Empire Solar Store at 6 Brunswick Road in October, is sure he won’t be alone for long, with the rising popularity of environmentally friendly initiatives.

Although home building has slowed with the recession, interest in saving energy — and money — has not, he said.

Sticker shock at the gas pumps last year reminded people they’re at the mercy of fossil fuels and the companies that sell them. For some homeowners, harnessing the sun’s energy is a logical step.
