The facility will also have the potential to make available 2MW of thermal energy for a district heating scheme as well as creating a high quality fertiliser for land restoration.
Anaerobic digestion is a process by which naturally occuring organisms, break down biodegradable material in the absence of oxygen. The process reduces the volume and mass of organic waste material and, used as an alternative to landfill, reduces the emission of landfill gas to atmosphere.
Anaerobic digestion also produces a methane and carbon dioxide-rich biogas suitable for energy production.
This new facility will divert 2 million tonnes of waste from landfill over its estimated 25-year operational life.
