SVO as a motor home fuel?
I am looking into straight vegetable oil as a fuel alternative for a motor home we want to retire in.
http://www.lazydaze.com/

I would special order the 6.0L Power Stroke Turbo provided veggie oil is feasible.
I asked on this website already:
http://www.greasecar.com/

Any experts out there on SVO?

Thanks!

1. Try this website
www.journeytoforever.org

They have a big section on biodiesel.

2. Should ask FORD
Someone was saying that VW will authorize European BioDiesel in their engines but not US/North American BioDiesel.

I suspect that unless you can demonstrate that the fuel you are using meets some API standard. That your warranty will be voided upon first use.

3. There are two options with off-the-shelf diesels as I understand it

1) Have two fuel tanks. One small one for regular diesel (or regular bio-diesel), and one main one for SVO. You need to start the engine on regular diesel, then switch to SVO after it's warmed up (SVO doesn't burn as well as diesel). Then, before you switch it off, turn it onto regular diesel for a moment first.

2) Just run bio-diesel. Most bio-diesels I'm aware of tend to use Methanol (a petroleum product) to process it. I've heard of one way to make it without fossil fuels. I think it can be made using lye and possibly ethanol, but I doubt that's available commercially anywhere.

I *have* heard rumors of Volkswagen rabbits running straight vegetable oil (without any modifications or bio-diesel processing). I've also heard that a particular tourist ferry boat out of Hawaii runs straight vegetable oil ("the french fry boat" was what I was told it was called).

Given that, it seems it should be *possible* to run a diesel engine on just SVO, but you might need to modify or retune the engine a bit (to deal with SVO's higher viscosity, lower flash point, etc...).

Know any retired diesel mechanics who still own their tools? This might be just the project for one of them.
