Hawaii to Become a Green Energy Paradise?
Hawaii aims to generate 70% of their energy from renewable sources. This would be a huge shift for the state.

Hawaii has big plans to become a model for renewable energy in America. The Aloha State recently signed an agreement with the federal Department of Energy committing to 70% renewable energy by 2030 – the most ambitious of any state in the Union.

Hawaii currently relies for 90% of its energy supply on expensive imported oil. This results not only in the highest electricity rates of any state ($0.11/kwh), but a perilous dependence on insecure supplies of a finite resource.

1. $0.11 per kwh is far from the highest in the country
I am paying $0.124 in Orlando, and it's a muni power company.

Florida *ought* to take a lesson from HI. I can't believe the total lack of solar applications here in the Sunshine State.
At a minimum, it ought to be mandated that new construction have solar water heating.

2. Florida
It seems Florida is taking some decent renewable energy steps. Florida Power and Light Company appears to be leading a lot of clean energy developments and initiatives such as Babcock Ranch--http://www.energyboom.com/first-solar-power-city-being-built-florida.

Hopefully you'll start receiving some of the renewable energy run-off in Orlando.

Or, one could focus on really pressing issues such as what the Magic need to do to defeat the Lakers.

3. The big island has huge amounts of geothermal energy.
As well as wind power.

Last time I was there, they had a wind farm on the southern tip of the island that seemed to be in disrepair.

4. Where did that data come from?
"This results not only in the highest electricity rates of any state ($0.11/kwh),..."

Kinda blows their credibility in my eyes. My last electric bill was $0.1233/KW-Hr here in Texas.

5. Hawaii Has the Highest Electricity Rates
The author was correct in claiming Hawaii has the highest rates. He, however, got the number wrong. In 2008, Hawaiians, on average, paid 29.2 cents/kWh for electricity. This rate was the highest in the country. In fact, Hawaii has had the highest rates since 2004.

Here is the link showing commercial and residential electricity rates in the U.S. for 2008: http://www.ded.missouri.gov/researchandplanning/newsletter/electricrates08.htm
