Texas teen's algae energy system wins $20,000 award
Very cool story. This teenager invented an extremely complex and multi-functional energy system.

Javier Fernández-Han, a 15-year-old who lives in the heart of oil country, has won a $20,000 scholarship for inventing a system that produces energy from algae.

The Houston teen won the top honor in the 2009 "Invent Your World Challenge," a social entrepreneurship contest sponsored by the Ashoka and Lemelson foundations.

5. This looks suspiciously like a small scale version of a system developed at Auburn University

6. At least someone's trying.
Sometimes big breakthroughs come from seemingly insignificant projects. I know this is old, but I still think that it's a pretty cool concept, turning garbage into energy.

Right now we send our garbage off to who knows where to pollute our groundwater. Maybe down the road our garbage will be putting more electricity on the grid without building more coal fired plants, just using the garbage that (sadly) will always exist.
