Vampire Fuel Cells Feed on Human Blood
Yes, you read the title right. Check out this research being done on creating a microbial fuel cell using yeast.

The hottest two things going right now are vampires and renewable energy. Okay, so maybe vampires are slightly hotter among teenagers and bored women approaching middle age. But it was inevitable that someone would put the two together.

A team at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver developed a very small microbial fuel cell using yeast, the same kind of yeast used to bake bread and brew beer. These yeast cells create power by feeding on the glucose in human blood. It’s not quite as gruesome as it sounds, though. Or maybe it is. But the fact is that it may be a life saving innovation if these tiny blood powered fuel cells can be used to create energy for devices like intraspinal microelectrodes for treating paralysis.

5. If it powers a medical device in the human body, human blood would seem a good choice.
Of course, if they could run on triglycerides or bad cholesterol ...

6. That is old technology
The program to deploy it commenced in 1981 and, to date, it has been implanted in approximately 20% of the US population.
