Climate change has some Texas animals fleeing the Texas heat

By ANNA M. TINSLEY
atinsley@star-telegram.com

As the hot days in Texas get even hotter, it may just be too much for some birds and fish.

From the American goldfinch to the gray snapper, some species have been moving north for years, searching for cooler ground.

And their quest may someday lead them to migrate out of the state — forever — especially if climate change continues to make Texas warmer, as predicted.

"The simple fact is, species may be migrating, shifting, because of climate changes," said Ted Hollingsworth, land conservation director for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. "If we want to preserve those, keep them in Texas, we need to be thinking ahead."

3. They're most definitively here . . .
Live in MO most of my life, and we never - never saw armadillos around KC until the past two or three years.

Now it's pretty routine to see them dead roadside.

2. Last night a scorpion moved into my house.
It's the first one I've seen in 16 years in AZ.

4. Austin, here...
The lack of birds, squirrels and other general wildlife in my backyard has been kind of creepy.

The mudwasps have been hovering near what little water I have in my rain barrels. The ants are still around, but so what else is new.

It's so quiet in my neighborhood now. I was hanging laundry yesterday, not a chirp. Nothing. The only sounds I heard was the occasional rooster crow by my neighbor down the way.

It's hot, dry and not a drop of rain in months.

I live in North Austin, while other areas of Austin have gotten rain, we haven't gotten anything.

It's bad. Stage 2 drought level kicks in on 24th. Watering only between 12 midnight and 8am.

I was never a big lawn person, but it's a sea of straw here now all over the neighborhood. I'm waiting for the smaller trees to go next.

If we don't get rain soon, it's going to get really bad.

Today, the temp is 101.
