Australia Pushing Limits Of Continent's Life-Support System, Says Federal Report - SMH
Australia is pushing the limits of its "natural life support system" and governments and the public must change the way they consider biodiversity, a new report to the Federal Government says.

The effects of climate change in Australia are already discernible at the genetic, species and ecosystems level in many parts of the continent and coastal areas, the report on Australia's Biodiversity and Climate Change says.

Climate change threatens the biodiversity of such natural features as the Great Barrier Reef, south-west Western Australia, the Australian Alps, Queensland's Wet Tropics and the Kakadu Wetlands, according to the report launched at the 10th International Congress of Ecology or Intecol conference in Brisbane today.

EDIT

The time when species could continue their existence in their present locations and ecosystems in their present composition is already gone.

2. First you need to get buy-in on the idea that there's actually a problem.
That's the stage we're still at. It's pretty pointless trying to talk about contingency plans if the consensus is that they're no contingency to plan for.

3. Whatever happened to Conservatism = PLAY IT SAFE...PLAN FOR THE WORST IF HINT OF DANGER
Apparently, myopic and lacking Realms, they are unabnle to solve...thus rejection of something they are incapable of comprehending...perhaps too lazy as well....

4. "conservatism" hasn't really been grounded in actual conservative concepts...
for some time now. I can't recall the last time "conservatives" actually adhered to fiscal conservatism, or the precautionary principle, etc. It's become a label for a political movement based on authoritarianism and corporatism, and not much else.

5. Aboriginal people lived in Australia for 40,000 years, living within the limits of the environment.
Europeans have ruined it all in a few hundred years.

The wrong folks are in charge.

6. To be fair, the Aborigines only began living within their limits after they caused a mass extinction
And assisted in converting the much of the continent's forests to grasslands through overuse of fire.

That seems to be the theme of human existence: we only learn our lesson after it bites us in the ass.
