Australia Environment Minister concedes extinction inevitable

THE Environment Minister, Peter Garrett, has warned that money to save endangered wildlife is limited and some species may have to be abandoned when funding decisions are made.

In one of the strongest speeches of his ministerial career he told an international conference of ecologists in Brisbane that the Government will shift its focus to protecting ''ecosystems'', rather than putting money into individual projects for endangered animals.

1. OMG DETH PANLES!

Honestly... "protect the ecosystems" is a bit smarter than "protect the species"... because focusing on the species ends up favoring whichever ones are cuter, and often ends up with an animal that only exists in captivity.

I'm not sure what the deal with "abandoning species" is - are they going to try to protect both species and environments, thereby once again favoring the cutsey cuddle-wuddles while short-shrifting the other side of the plan?
