Sept. 8 (Bloomberg) -- The world risks warming by 4 degrees Celsius by 2100, and there’s a “real danger” the United Nations won’t reach a deal to fight climate change by its December deadline, U.K. Foreign Secretary David Miliband said.
That level of temperature gain since industrialization, equivalent to 7.2 degrees Fahrenheit, would cause mass migration within countries and across borders, damage infrastructure and increase competition for water, Miliband told reporters today in London. If that occurs, the UN Security Council’s business by mid-century would be dominated by climate change, he said.
Global talks have been bogged down as 192 nations wrangle over sharing burdens to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions, fund adaptation to climate change in the developing world and transfer of technology for wind and solar power to the poorest countries. The nations have set a deadline to reach a deal in Copenhagen by year-end.
“There is a real danger that the talks scheduled for December will not reach a positive outcome,” said Miliband, speaking alongside his brother Ed, the U.K.’s climate and energy secretary. “The science is increasingly clear that business as usual means we’re heading for a world in which temperatures rise by about 4 degrees probably towards the end of this century.”
