I just received an action alert from the Shark Research Institute. HK Disneyland, scheduled to open this coming December, has already booked a waiting list for 1000 wedding receptions, featuring "traditional Chinese delicacies such as roast suckling pig, SHARK'S FIN SOUP and sliced abalone."
Demand for shark fin soup in Asia is the main contributing factor to the global decline of the shark populations - over 250 species down by 50 to 89% since 1986. Often sharks are "finned" and the rest of their bodies dumped at sea - often they are still alive.
Sharks are frightening creatures, but they are also the apex predator of the seas and catastrophic damage to the marine ecosystem would result from their extinction. Marine scientists predict that continued removal of sharks from the seas will have dire consequences for other fish species that we humans rely upon for food.
Shark fin soup was once an expensive luxury for the privileged few in South China, but now it is mass produced and served to millions at weddings, banquets and business dinners. The Asian belief is that it is an aphrodisiac.
